Bernard "Bernie" Silverman, the man who led the New York Metropolitan Conference of the NFTB's High Holy Days Committee for 25 years, and whose warmth, wit, generosity and unique spirit infuses every aspect of our High Holy Days program, passed away on September 9, 2006. Bernie was a committed Jew who was deeply involved in the leadership of a number of Jewish organizations, including the New York Metropolitan Conference, of which he was a past president.

Bernie, a father of four and grandfather of six, had a special devotion to youth, and the Free High Holy Days Services for College Students were a passion for Bernie. They are a manifestation of his commitment to the continued growth of the Reform Jewish community through its young people, and, quite literally, would not have been possible all these years without the selfless dedication of Bernie and his wife Naomi, who not only provided leadership but also managed virtually every logistical aspect of publicizing, raising money for and putting on these Services during Bernie's tenure.

The rest of the Committee is committed to carrying on in Bernie's spirit to continue providing a place for college students and other young adults away from home to observe the High Holy Days as part of our once-a-year congregation.
